🏦 Revolut has just obtained a crypto license in Gibraltar. It may seem far removed from us, but it’s a signal: neobanks are preparing crypto services for countries outside Europe.
📌 The facts (Revolut, Government of Gibraltar, The Block, Oct. 19, 2026)
• New entity: Revolut Global Digital Assets Limited
• DLT (blockchain technology) provider license issued by the GFSC, Gibraltar’s regulator
• Authorized activities: crypto custody, staking, transmission and execution of orders
• Revolut claims to have more than 80 million customers and over 16 million crypto users
• The countries targeted have not yet been announced: “in due course”
🧠 How it works
A license is permission to operate under supervision. Revolut already has the UK and Europe (MiCA rules). Gibraltar gives it a base from which to serve other markets under a single, clear framework.
👤 Adama (a fictional character), a mechanic in Abidjan, sees ads for neobanks. For him, the real question is: who holds my crypto, and who protects me if things go wrong?
⚖️ A few caveats
• Africa has not been mentioned; nothing has been confirmed
• Keeping your crypto on a platform means trusting a third party
• Staking can earn returns, but it involves risks
• Watch out for fake “Revolut crypto Africa” links
