Claude Code accidentally discovered a hidden Monero miner on a developer’s Mac. The processor heated up to 112 °C, while XMRig loaded the system to 1175% (nearly 12 cores).

The developer noticed that their computer had started lagging badly and overheating. Instead of running a standard process check, they asked Claude Code to write a custom temperature-monitoring program.

While checking the sensors, the AI agent came across an unusually high load. It turned out to be XMRig, popular Monero-mining software. Claude Code then helped stop the process and remove its startup mechanism, completely cleaning out the miner.

On the one hand, this is a great example of how AI agents can tackle cybersecurity tasks. On the other, malware is getting increasingly sophisticated.
