Even the giant that settles U.S. stocks is moving on-chain—and that’s far more substantial than just talking the talk 👀
A few days ago, DTCC announced the details of its tokenization service:
Commercial launch by the end of October, with just 25 securities in the first batch.
Large-cap Russell 1000 stocks, ETFs, and U.S. Treasuries are all included.
Here are a few key details:
Each token corresponds 1:1 to an actual security held in DTC custody. The CUSIP number, rights, and legal protections all remain unchanged.
DTC still controls the ledger; the blockchain is simply an additional way to transfer securities.
Registered wallets on the same network can transfer tokens between each other 24/7.
But switching between traditional and tokenized forms is only possible on business days, from 2 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern Time, with a target completion time of 15 minutes.
There are also two figures worth distinguishing:
About $30 trillion is the pool that could be tokenized in the future—roughly a quarter of the $114 trillion in assets held in DTC custody.
That doesn’t mean $30 trillion will be on-chain on day one. Don’t let the headlines mislead you.
More than 30 institutions have already run real production transactions in July—that’s where the credibility comes from.
The most sobering point:
At first, this will only be available to eligible DTC participants: major banks, brokerages, custodians, and their clients.
Retail investors can’t access it yet or transfer tokens into their own wallets.
So this isn’t another “tokenized U.S. stocks” product for retail investors to trade. It’s Wall Street’s own plumbing moving on-chain first.
The 2027 roadmap also includes Stellar and Circle’s Arc.
On Ethereum, Besu follows the ERC-20 standard, and RWA already has its deepest footprint there—so Ethereum is still in the game this round.
My take:
The real dividing line for tokenization has never been how many tokens are issued.
It’s whether the settlement layer is willing to bring real assets, real custody, and real rights on-chain.
With this move, DTCC has turned “willing” into a timeline.
How many years do you think it’ll be before retail investors can actually use on-chain U.S. stocks?
