Sending money from one African country to another is still often complicated: currency conversion fees, settlement delays, and fragmented payment infrastructure. Stablecoins like USDT and USDC offer a different approach: transferring digital value pegged to a fiat currency, mainly the US dollar, then converting or settling it through local infrastructure.
In late September 2026, African fintech company Kora launched One Rail, an infrastructure that allows merchants to use stablecoins for certain cross-border settlements.
The goal is to make international payments faster, more accessible, and potentially less costly.
But how can stablecoins be integrated without creating new risks for users and African financial systems? 🌍 Will the future of African payments be partly digital and stablecoin-based?
⚖️🌍 What is the state of crypto regulation in West Africa?
West Africa is making progress, but there is not yet a single framework covering all the countries in the region. In the WAEMU, the BCEAO is currently working on developing a regulatory framework dedicated to crypto-assets. At the same time, each country has its own legal and regulatory environment. Côte d’Ivoire, Benin, Togo, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger… approaches can therefore differ, even within a shared monetary union.
Should crypto regulation be further harmonized at the regional level to foster innovation while protecting users?
🌍 Can West Africa build a common crypto framework?
You often hear: “This blockchain is fast, so transactions must be cheap.”
Not necessarily.
A blockchain can confirm a transaction in a few seconds while showing high fees.
Why?
Because speed and capacity aren’t the same thing. Each network has limited resources: space in the blocks, processing capacity, and the resources required by validators. When demand increases sharply, users can end up competing to get their transactions recorded. Result: a blockchain can remain very fast while becoming more expensive to use.
👉 So “fast” doesn’t necessarily mean “cheap.”
This is one of the essential concepts to understand before comparing blockchains.
In your opinion, what matters most: speed or fees?
Africa is no longer just an emerging market for crypto assets.
According to Chainalysis's 2026 Global Crypto Adoption Index, Nigeria ranks 3rd globally for grassroots adoption, while South Africa comes in at 9th.
Chainalysis also highlights the strong growth of crypto activity in Sub-Saharan Africa, driven in particular by P2P exchanges and cross-border transfers. Stablecoins are also playing an increasingly important role in payments and the transfer of value between Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.
BNB Chain surpasses 1 billion $ d’actions and tokenized ETF
BNB Chain has just crossed a new milestone in the tokenization of financial assets. According to Token Terminal data, the value of tokenized stocks and ETFs on BNB Chain is about $1.1 billion.
The chain therefore accounts for nearly 30% of the global market for tokenized stocks and ETFs. BNB Chain becomes the first blockchain to exceed the $1 billion threshold in this category.
The tokenization of financial markets continues to move on-chain.
Ghana : 21 billion dollars in crypto transactions per year
Ghana is now being presented as the 5th-largest crypto market in sub-Saharan Africa, according to a recent IMF analysis.
The Fund estimates that the country’s annual crypto transaction volume is about $21 billion. Between 8% and 17% of the population may have already bought or sold crypto-assets.
Stablecoins are also growing, especially in trading, inflation hedging, and certain cross-border settlements. But note: the $21 billion figure refers to transaction volume, not $21 billion in new capital injected into the economy.
Ghana is now preparing to roll out its framework for supervising virtual assets. Africa is no longer just adopting crypto. It is also starting to build its own regulatory frameworks.
