Ethereum, this perpetual engine of blockchain innovation, has once again found itself at the center of heated debates. On the agenda is the implementation of EOF (EVM Object Format), as well as the upcoming Pectra and Fusaka updates. Let's figure out what's what and how these disputes affect the future of the platform.
Why is everyone arguing?
EOF is like an improved engine for a car that makes it a bit faster and more efficient. But there's a catch: some developers believe that the benefits of this innovation do not outweigh the potential difficulties. Among the skeptics is Geth developer Marius van der Weyden. Six months ago, he openly stated that "the drawbacks of EOF outweigh the advantages." And now? Judging by his recent tweet, he seems to have waved off this dispute.
What is happening now?
On the horizon is the closer Pectra update, which is already being prepared for testing on the Holesky and Sepolia networks. Public tests start on February 24 and March 5, with a mainnet launch planned for April 8.
But the main challenge remains the Fusaka update. Tim Baiko from the Ethereum Foundation proposed a new schedule:
March 13 is the deadline for proposals.
March 27 is the preference agreement.
April 10 is the final decision.
The speed of updates implementation has become the main bone of contention. Geth developers advocate caution, emphasizing the importance of balance: "We need to understand which proposals best fit the goals for next year."
At the same time, proponents of acceleration, such as Reth developer Roman Krasiuk, argue: "We will never move faster if we don't agree in advance on the scope of work."
How will this affect Ethereum?
EOF continues to be tested on separate networks, despite criticism. Independent developers and client teams support its inclusion. Meanwhile, Pectra promises to be a step forward in improving data accessibility and network performance.
