🔥 Hong Kong milestone! Standard Chartered leads as compliance-focused HKD stablecoin HKDAP officially launches
The news is true: Standard Chartered Hong Kong, in partnership, has led the launch of HKD stablecoin HKDAP under the Hong Kong Monetary Authority license by Anchorpoint Finance. The first phase began on August 12. It is currently available only to institutional distributors and professional investors, with plans to consider opening access to ordinary retail users no earlier than end of 2026.
This is not an unlicensed “wild” stablecoin from the public. After the Hong Kong Stablecoin Ordinance was implemented, it is among the first batch of licensed HKD-pegged stablecoins. Reserve assets are regulated, pegged 1:1 to the HKD, and the focus is on cross-border settlement and tokenized RWA businesses. At this stage, it is not aimed at retail traders.
Market impact:
1、Breaks the dominance of USD stablecoins alone; Asia-Pacific finally has a legitimate, Hong Kong-compliant HKD stablecoin, strengthening Hong Kong’s digital-asset infrastructure.
2、Run the business first via the B2B side, with retail following later. The regulator’s stance is extremely cautious—prioritizing verification of the reserve, redemptions, and the full risk-control system.
3、Subsequently, it will compete with HSBC’s HKD stablecoin, which could further energize the Hong Kong-styled stablecoin ecosystem and the tokenization of RWA assets.
In simple terms: HKD is officially “on-chain,” but regular users can’t access it yet—you’ll have to wait until the end of the year to see how implementation progresses.
Do you think HKD stablecoins will develop further?
