Bitget loses $387.5M and halts withdrawals

Quick context:
- Hot and warm wallets were drained on Sept 24, while cold wallets are reportedly safe
- The loss was revised up from $351.6M after Zcash and TRON assets were traced (not a second attack)
- The CEO says attackers spoofed transaction data to trigger Bitget's own approvals. Keys were not stolen.
- North Korea is the leading suspect, though it isn't confirmed yet

The interesting part is the protection fund. Bitget says its ~$464M fund covers everything, but that fund is held in BTC. So the cushion shrinks if BTC dips before settlement.

Bitget says approximately $351.6M in assets were affected, involving portions of its hot and warm wallet layers, while cold wallets remained secure. The exchange also says its $464M+ User Protection Fund is sufficient to cover the reported amount.

The more important security issue is the attack path.
Bitget’s preliminary investigation indicates that a critical backend system in its wallet infrastructure was compromised. The attacker reportedly spoofed transaction data and triggered Bitget’s normal authorization process. Bitget says a direct private-key compromise has been ruled out.#BitgetExchange

That makes the incident more than a simple “private key leak.” The key question now is how the attacker gained access to the backend system and why existing controls allowed unauthorized transactions to pass through the authorization pipeline.

About the security incident at Bitget and the measures taken:

On September 24, 2026, Bitget’s security systems detected unauthorized transfers in some of its hot wallets. The estimated economic impact reached $351.6 million, affecting exclusively a portion of the hot and warm wallet layers, while cold wallets remained completely secure.

To protect the community, the company activated an emergency response team within minutes, notified the police and chain security authorities, and temporarily suspended withdrawals as a preventive measure.

The CEO, Gracy Chen, confirmed that users’ funds are fully protected and that the amount of the loss is entirely covered by Bitget’s User Protection Fund, which has more than $464 million.

The platform also received support from independent experts such as Mandiant and SlowMist, along with the collaboration of Binance’s security team for tracing funds.

Bitget reiterated that account balances are accurate and that deposits along with trading continue to operate, pending the resumption of withdrawals once the security review has been completed.

Well, this Bitget investigation got only a little bit more complicated 🤣🤣

Total of $200M traced, which is above most of the initial claims of $185M, although Bitget admits a total of $385M compromised; I suspect most of those funds are on less-traceable chains like xrp, ada, sui, etc...

The test/retest I was finally waiting for has arrived
I traded Ethereum through the 2,665$–2,700$ zone and even dipped slightly below it, but the most important point is that we still have not recorded a 4H timeframe close below 2,640$
So the setup is still in place
However, I can’t say the rebound is fully convincing yet
ETF fund flows are still positive, but they are slowing down, and Ethereum/BTC still doesn’t show real strength. The last rebound was helped largely by short liquidations
So if you took the retest, I think your position is still reasonable
I just won’t add here after
What I want in the next step:
Reclaim 2,700$ and hold it
Then ultimately
Acceptance/holding at 2,785$
A 4H close below 2,640$ will invalidate the setup
