Trump stated on May 7 that it was Beijing that initiated the upcoming high-level trade talks between the U.S. and China, and noted that he would not lower tariffs on China in exchange for Beijing coming to the negotiating table.
As U.S.-China trade tensions have escalated, Beijing has repeatedly stated that it will not participate in negotiations unless the U.S. removes tariffs. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce has hinted that it was the U.S. that expressed the willingness to hold trade talks.
In response to a reporter's question, he said: "They say we initiated (the talks)? Well, I think they should go back and study their records carefully."
When asked by reporters if he was willing to lower tariffs on China to encourage the Chinese Communist Party to negotiate, Trump firmly replied: "No."
Trump stated: "We were losing a trillion dollars a year in trade with China—actually more. Do you know what we have lost now? Nothing. That's not bad."
