Just before the attack occurred, Trump stated in Washington that Russia was ready to reach an agreement regarding the war in Ukraine. 'I believe we have reached an agreement with Russia,' Trump said, while also pressuring Ukrainian President Zelensky.
But Zelensky clearly stated that Ukraine will not abandon Crimea as part of an agreement. The two had a heated exchange on social media afterwards.

Due to a massive attack on Kyiv, Zelensky announced on Thursday morning that he would cut short his visit to South Africa. He stated on Telegram that he would cancel part of his itinerary and return to Kyiv immediately.
According to reports from the emergency services department, search and rescue operations are underway at 13 locations throughout the city, including aerial rescues and police dog assistance. A total of 40 fires have been reported so far.
