What is the Flowering Desert?
This phenomenon occurs every 5 or 10 years and consists of the appearance of more than 200 species of flowers and plants in the soils of the Atacama Desert. The seeds that are found underground germinate and bloom on certain occasions: when there is heavy rain (at least 15mm is needed for the shoots to grow) and the absence of frost. Curiously, in 2022 Atacama bloomed for the second consecutive year. This event benefits the local fauna, causing the appearance of numerous animals in the area in search of food. Environmental researchers say that climate change is contributing to this phenomenon becoming more frequent.
