It was just two days away, and the countdown reset all the way to zero 😅
This is about the XRP Ledger patch fixCleanup3_4_0.
It was originally set to activate on October 23 at 09:34 UTC.
But then a little two-hour hiccup happened around noon on Wednesday.
I looked into the rules, and they’re actually pretty strict:
Changing the rules requires over 80% of the 35 trusted validators to approve—that means at least 29 votes.
The system checks roughly every 15 minutes.
For 14 days, every single check has to pass.
Miss once, and the clock resets to zero.
On Monday, it was sitting right at 29 votes, with not a single vote to spare.
At the check on Wednesday at 12:54 UTC, it had only 26 votes.
It didn’t get back to 29 until 14:46 UTC, and that’s when the new countdown started.
It’s now expected to activate on November 4 at 14:46 UTC.
The good news is that support has climbed to 31 votes, giving it a two-vote buffer this time.
The patch itself is no small thing either:
It closes a token-creation loophole—an account authorized to burn tokens could potentially turn around and create new tokens.
It also makes some adjustments to vault and lending calculations.
But the lending system itself hasn’t received enough votes yet, so its own countdown hasn’t even started. Don’t take this to mean lending is about to launch.
I actually think this kind of slowness is a good thing.
Better to be two weeks late than to change the rules incorrectly and just hope for the best.
Decentralized governance is often less about speed and more about this kind of tedious persistence.
What do you think?
Is a threshold where one missed vote resets the 14-day countdown too conservative, or just right?
