Ripple has just launched 24/7 institutional trading through Ripple Prime: institutional clients can use the RLUSD stablecoin as margin to trade stocks, indexes, ETFs, precious metals, energy, and forex at any time. It covers more than 100 markets—and trading doesn’t stop on weekends.

A few key points:
🔹 Ripple Prime acts as the counterparty, with the trades executed via Hyperliquid perpetual futures
🔹 Cross-margining is supported, improving capital efficiency
🔹 Market maker Virtu is already using the service. It currently operates under a British Virgin Islands license, with plans to expand later

But there are also some more cautious takes. HSBC sees this as an incremental improvement, since liquidity is very thin outside regular trading hours, making it hard to fill large orders. There’s already been one example: a chip stock position worth around $52 million was liquidated quickly.

My take: using stablecoins as margin and on-chain perpetuals to trade traditional assets really does bring crypto’s “never closes” model to traditional finance. But “you can trade” and “there’s sufficient depth” are two different things. Weekend order books are thin, and one sudden price spike can wipe out leveraged positions. If institutions are exposed to that risk, retail traders should be even more careful.

What I’m more curious about is this: if institutions are starting to trade US stocks with perpetuals over the weekend, will the gap at Monday’s open still be as large?
