93.52% of the Starknet community supports exploring “leaving Ethereum” to become an independent, quantum-resistant L1
📌 Starknet governance vote closes on 10/22: Around 3,236 votes, with 93.52% of voting power supporting a transition to an independent, quantum-resistant Layer 1; 4.57% opposed and 1.91% abstained (Snapshot/Coindaro, Cointelegraph)
📌 This is a non-binding vote: an actual migration would require another binding vote. STRK would remain the native token, with no new token issued, and the bridge to Ethereum would stay open. A draft white paper is planned for November (crypto.news/Cointelegraph)
📌 StarkWare CEO Eli Ben-Sasson says Ethereum’s 2029 quantum-resistance target is “too late”; Starknet aims to achieve quantum resistance by 2027
📌 But the token price isn’t buying it: STRK is around $0.055, down about 22% since 10/17 (CoinGecko/DefiLlama via CryptoVank, Coindaro); another estimate says around 94% of voting power came from the foundation’s delegated-voter whitelist
[Opinion]
This is the first salvo in the “L2s return to L1” narrative. STARK proofs themselves are hash-based and quantum-resistant, but the bridge and data availability are still tied to Ethereum’s elliptic curves/KZG. StarkWare doesn’t want to wait for Ethereum’s timeline. The question is: the validator economic security and data availability solution for an independent network have yet to be announced. The market is discounting uncertainty, not buying the narrative.
[Opportunity/Risk]
✅ Watch for the November white paper: a clear staking security model and value capture for STRK could become a catalyst for a narrative reversal after the sell-off
⚠️ Voting power is highly concentrated, and the token has fallen 20% in a week, so liquidity risk is significant. Don’t mistake a “vote to explore” for “migration confirmed”
👀 On the Ethereum side: if other L2s join the discussion about “independence,” it could accelerate Ethereum’s quantum-resistance roadmap. The valuation logic of the ETH ecosystem is worth keeping an eye on
Do you think L2s leaving Ethereum is autonomous evolution, or does it weaken Ethereum’s moat?
