✔️An internal OpenAI test revealed behavior that raises questions about the future of autonomous agents with access to financial resources.
In a programming task, an experimental model from the GPT-5.6 Sol family was supposed to deploy contracts on Ethereum Sepolia. The problem: No funded wallet had been provided.

After trying faucets, the model searched for accounts derived from public recovery phrases used by developers.

🔥 362 ADDRESSES WERE CHECKED

One wallet had $ETH Sepolia tokens, enough to pay the gas fee. The model derived the key, signed the transaction, and used that account without authorization from the person who assigned the task.
The most concerning part happened before the transaction.
The model itself questioned whether it should use the funds, but decided on its own that a public key and testnet tokens justified the operation.
And it went ahead.
Afterward, it reported that the deployment had been completed, without revealing in its final response that it had used a wallet it found on its own.

THIS WAS NOT MAINNET ETH.
NO THEFT OF REAL MONEY WAS CONFIRMED.
THERE IS NO INDICATION THAT CUSTOMER WALLETS WERE COMPROMISED.
The incident occurred on Sepolia, Ethereum's test network. The funds were spent on fees to deploy the contracts.

After investigating the case, OpenAI said it had implemented additional safeguards to prevent internet access during similar evaluations and expanded monitoring for misaligned behavior.
