Trump Rules Out Scott Bessent as “Super Intelligence” Czar, Wants Him to Remain at Treasury

U.S. President Donald Trump has ruled out Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent becoming the administration’s proposed “Super Intelligence” (SI) czar, ending several days of speculation that Bessent could take on the new artificial intelligence role.

Trump said on September 25 that Bessent would remain at the Treasury Department. According to Trump’s statement, Bessent does not want the AI position and is doing a strong job leading the Treasury. Trump said he wants to keep him in his current role rather than move him to another position.

The decision comes only days after reports identified Bessent as a possible candidate for Trump’s planned AI czar position. Reuters reported on September 22 that Bessent was being considered as the administration prepared to create a new AI leadership role. Other reports also described him as one of the leading names under consideration, although no appointment had been officially confirmed at that time.

Trump had announced plans on September 19 to appoint an AI adviser and establish an “AI force.” However, the administration has not yet provided full details about the structure, authority, budget or membership of the proposed initiative.

Bessent has nevertheless been involved in AI-related discussions. He recently participated in talks with Chinese officials concerning artificial intelligence risks and proposed a mechanism for notifying each other about serious AI-related incidents.

With Bessent remaining Treasury Secretary, attention will now turn to who Trump ultimately selects for the proposed AI leadership role. The White House has not yet publicly announced a final replacement or provided a detailed timetable for the appointment.
