I personally ran the TBV vault setup, and the first phase wasn’t about understanding cryptography it was about chaining together more than twenty pre-signed transactions. By the tenth (check-in/signing) I stopped counting. My finger muscles just kept tapping “confirm,” while my brain repeatedly doubted whether the wallet had crashed. Later I finally gave in after reading the documentation: this is a hard requirement of BitVM3 garbled circuits. During vault initialization, you must pre-sign every possible future withdrawal path, encode them all at once into the Taproot script tree, and then lock it down no changes, no deletion, no additions.
This premise wipes out all flexibility afterward.
With a fixed script tree,the vault denomination must also be fixed.The system only offers three tiers: 0.01, 0.1,and 1 BTC. I wanted to lock 0.05 BTC, and the pop-up rejected it immediately.The reason is stated in the docs: the garbled circuit’s backward-pass fails when the fan-out exceeds 1,so
each vault must be independently isolated,with a fixed amount never mixed with anyone else’s BTC. Secure, clean, and audit-friendly.But if you want to add an extra 0.02 to the same vault? Rebuild it. Want to merge two small vaults? Not possible the pre-signed tree is written in stone.
And there’s the 1-of-N security model: as long as even one honest verifier is online, it can catch fraud. But who is that verifier? I searched through GitHub and couldn’t find any public watchtower implementation. Most likely Babylon or a partner node runs it in the background, and users have no idea who is watching on their behalf. Trust it? It feels more like you don’t know who you’re actually trusting.
WBTC’s trust model has plenty of flaws, but at least you can transfer any amount at any time. TBV uses a pre-signed tree to enable self-custody, but the price is turning BTC back into fixed-denomination certificates each one an independent locked deposit. Is this really an evolution of self-custody, or is it dragging Bitcoin liquidity back to the gold-bar era?
