Fed Gets More Room to Pause as Inflation Cools

August PCE inflation came in at 3.4% YoY, below the 3.7% level economists had expected. Core PCE was also softer than forecasts, rising 3.0% annually and 0.2% month-over-month.

At the same time, the labor market showed signs of easing. JOLTS job openings fell to 7.079 million in August, down from 7.335 million in July. The latest BLS data confirms the decline, although layoffs remain relatively low.

The combination of cooler inflation and somewhat softer labor demand could give the Fed more flexibility when considering its next rate decision.

However, inflation is still above the Fed’s 2% target, so one softer report does not guarantee a pause. Markets will likely focus on the next inflation and employment releases for confirmation of the broader trend.
