UKRAINE 🇺🇦 - RUSSIA 🇷🇺 : AZERBAIJAN PROVIDES ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT TO KIEV, MOSCOW THREATENS
On August 11, 2025, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev announced $2 million in humanitarian aid to Ukraine, funded by the reserve budget. This amount will be used to purchase locally manufactured electrical equipment (cables, transformers) to repair the Ukrainian network damaged by the war. This support adds to the one million dollars sent in February, bringing total aid to over $40 million since the beginning of the conflict.
Russia, Azerbaijan's historical ally, reacted with anger. Russian Deputy Andrei Gurulev threatened to ban all Azerbaijani products and restrict the activity of its companies in Russia. He also insinuated that the war could “extend across the entire Russian border,” a clear message: any aid to Kiev will be considered a betrayal.
Why is Baku taking this risk? First, for its economic ties with Ukraine, and secondly, to enhance its international image by supporting humanitarian causes while asserting some independence from Moscow.
For Russia, this position is unacceptable: it wants to deter its partners from helping Kiev. If the threats materialize, Azerbaijan would lose an important market but could turn to Turkey or the West.
For Kiev, this aid is mainly symbolic: it shows that even countries close to Moscow dare to challenge the Kremlin. It remains to be seen whether Moscow will move from words to actions, risking the weakening of a strategic relationship, particularly regarding trade and energy corridors.
