How Did Metaplanet Acquire 17,000 Bitcoins in Just One Year?
Metaplanet, a Tokyo-based financial company, currently holds 17,595 Bitcoins (BTC), according to their official website as of Friday (08/08). Remarkably, they amassed this amount within just one year, starting from April 2024.
So, how did they achieve this?
Originally, Metaplanet operated as a financial services company. However, in 2024, they shifted their business direction by acquiring 97 Bitcoins on Wednesday, April 24th. Shortly after, they appointed Dylan LeClair as their Bitcoin Strategy Director, signaling a serious commitment to this new focus.
With renewed determination, Metaplanet sought new funding through share sales to finance large Bitcoin purchases. This strategic move enabled the company to accumulate tens of thousands of Bitcoins, currently valued at approximately IDR 33.3 trillion. Additionally, the company’s BTC Yield has reached 459.2% since the start of the year.
Because of this success, Metaplanet has earned the nickname "The Strategy from Asia," leveraging special funding mechanisms to expand their Bitcoin holdings.
Looking ahead, the company aims to own 210,000 Bitcoins within the next two years, continuing their current approach but with a much larger funding pool—555 billion yen, equivalent to about IDR 61.1 trillion.
