On Friday, July 11, 2025, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un received Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to promise him "unconditional support" for Russia in its war against Ukraine. The two men met in a friendly atmosphere, a sign that their countries are becoming increasingly close, especially since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine.
In clear terms, this means that North Korea is ready to help Russia militarily, whether by sending soldiers, weapons, or otherwise. In fact, Pyongyang is said to have already provided thousands of soldiers and equipment to Moscow. Kim Jong-un even stated that he supported "without conditions" all of Russia's actions to resolve the Ukrainian crisis, affirming his belief in Moscow's ultimate victory.
This alliance between Russia and North Korea is not new. In 2024, the two countries signed a partnership agreement, even including a promise to mutually defend each other in case of an attack. Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un met on this occasion, and since then, their relations have only strengthened.
Lavrov, for his part, took advantage of this visit to warn the United States, Japan, and South Korea against forming an alliance against North Korea. He accused them of increasing their military presence around the country, which, according to him, threatens the stability of the region.
