Political turmoil surrounds the thoughtless decision of a Czech minister regarding the acceptance of a 45 million USD Bitcoin donation from a criminal, boosting the opposition's momentum toward the parliamentary elections in October.
While the government escapes a vote of no confidence, this scandal is weakening voter trust in the ruling coalition, according to the latest survey results. The main opposition party, which initiated the resolution, is getting closer to victory, receiving support from more than one-third of voters.
The cryptocurrency fundraising scandal is changing the attitudes of voters.
The ANO party, the right-wing nationalist of entrepreneur and former Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, is on track to win the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Data from the STEM Institute's survey for CNN Prima News shows that the ANO party is expected to lead in votes this fall, with over 31% of the total votes, according to the report.
The role of this party as the main opposition force remains unchallenged due to a wide base of loyal voters. Babiš's party has significant support among less educated and older groups, but is also competitive in other demographic groups, the authors noted, adding:
This movement is not threatened in its leadership position of opposing voices.
The center-right Spolu coalition, led by incumbent Prime Minister Petr Fiala along with the Civic Democratic Party (ODS), is in second place with over 20% of the votes. However, the Bitcoin-related scandal is clearly affecting their results.
STEM noted that such serious factors often take weeks to manifest clearly in election results, and they raised the question:
Will the downward trend continue or will Spolu stabilize its support?
Meanwhile, the Freedom and Direct Democracy Party (SPD), the symbol of the extreme right opposition, has solidified its position as the main representative of the resistance movement. This party is particularly supported by older middle-aged voters and those lacking secondary education.
Meanwhile, the neutral and liberal party 'Mayors and Independents' (STAN), allied with the ODS, the Christian Democratic Party (KDU-ČSL), and the TOP 09 party in the ruling coalition, has seen a decline in support, from nearly 13% at the beginning of the year to 9.4%.
ANO's success despite failing to overthrow the government
The STEM survey was conducted from May 30 to June 17, with 2,074 responses from across the country. If elections were held during this period, the ANO party would win about 78 seats in the 200-seat parliament, while the Spolu coalition would secure about 48 seats.
In the effort to overthrow the current government, this party was once the dominant force. This week, Fiala's cabinet survived the no-confidence vote, thanks to widespread support from coalition parties.
The scandal revolves around the Czech Ministry of Justice accepting a donation of 1 billion koruna (equivalent to 45 million USD) in Bitcoin from Tomáš Jiřikovský, who operated a darknet marketplace and was convicted of drug trafficking, embezzlement, and illegal possession of firearms.
Justice Minister Pavel Blažek has resigned to take political responsibility. However, the opposition in the Czech Republic is also demanding the Prime Minister's resignation. The ANO party continues to call for the removal of Finance Minister Zbyněk Stanjura, accusing him of failing to timely report this questionable donation.
Other parties in the STEM survey, which may or may not be able to participate in the new parliament, include the Pirate Party (7.2%), the Enough! Party (5.4%), and the Motorists for Themselves Party (4.4%).
