Paul Atkins at the SEC renews optimism and expectations for altcoin ETFs
The crypto market remains euphoric with Paul Atkins' rise to the position of chairman of the U.S. SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission).
There is much hope and optimism about what his appointment means for crypto, following a season of repressive regulation from his predecessor, Gary Gensler.
Following positive advances in legal proceedings against crypto companies and reversals of oppressive banking regulations, what comes next? On one hand, the market anticipates the implementation of a Strategic Reserve of Bitcoin, with the U.S. on its way to becoming a Global Bitcoin Superpower.
Meanwhile, ETF analyst Eric Balchunas appealed to Paul Atkins for hints on when the U.S. SEC will approve the first spot XRP ETF, among other altcoin-based financial instruments.
Meanwhile, he and his colleague, ETF analyst James Seyffart, remain optimistic that the approval of additional altcoin ETFs beyond Ethereum is just a matter of time.
“I would like to hear directly from Atkins, but there's a good chance it will happen,” Balchunas stated.
Specifically for them, the XRP ETF has an 85% chance of approval, placing it among the leaders for regulatory approval in 2025. Balchunas also shared a list outlining the approval odds for various spot crypto ETFs.

Atkins' confirmation excites the market, but ETFs may be delayed until the end of 2025
Meanwhile, Seyffart notes that delays in approval should not come as a surprise. He encourages crypto market participants to keep hope beyond October 2025 and even until the end of the year in the worst-case scenario.
“…The deadlines for most of these things are in October 2025 or later,” Seyffart stated.
However, Balchunas acknowledges that Paul Atkins' confirmation as the new SEC chairman has initiated the process.
“…nothing would be approved until Atkins was confirmed…he has just been confirmed and they have been holding external meetings with people. Probably drafting a strategy. After that, approvals are likely,” Balchunas opined.
Crypto traders and investors would welcome more exchange-traded funds based on altcoins beyond the Ethereum ETF. Such financial instruments would give more legitimacy to crypto, level the playing field for institutional participation, and thus increase liquidity.
A recent publication from US Crypto News indicated growing adoption of BTC relative to gold, with Bitcoin ETF inflows increasing compared to falling gold ETPs (exchange-traded products).
ProShares Futures XRP ETP will begin trading
Meanwhile, these developments occur after false rumors circulated claiming that the U.S. SEC had approved an XRP ETF. However, BeInCrypto invalidated those claims, clarifying that only leveraged and short XRP futures ETFs were authorized to trade on April 30.
Despite false claims, the approval of ProShares' XRP futures ETF generated optimism. Experts now predict that a spot XRP ETF could follow, potentially attracting $100 billion to the payment token.
“A spot XRP ETF could be next, unlocking real demand and making prices soar. $100 billion+ could soon flood into XRP,” wrote industry expert Armando Pantoja.
In this context, analysts say that an approval could see the price of XRP rise by nearly 50%, potentially reaching the $3.40 level. Others also suggest that XRP could surpass Ethereum in market capitalization metrics.
