The aromatic apple of death.

Manzanilla, or "apple of death" (from the Spanish "manzana", meaning "apple"), is often called the Tree of Death. This spreading tree with poisonous fruits, resembling small apples or guavas, is widely distributed on the sandy sea coasts of the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico and the Galapagos Islands.

The attractive yellowish-red fruits, growing singly or in pairs, have a sweet smell. In the past, these fruits took the lives of hundreds of Spanish conquistadors, pirates and ordinary European sailors who tried to quench their hunger and thirst by enjoying their pleasant aroma.
