Democratic lawmakers harshly criticized U.S. President Donald Trump's plans to dine with the top holders of his memecoin on May 22, 2025, demanding answers about who was present and labeling the event as an unprecedented attack on the transparency norms that have historically surrounded the presidency of the United States.
“Donald Trump's dinner is a corruption orgy,” said Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) during a press conference on Thursday. “The American people have no idea who is buying access to the president, nor do they know what they are getting in return.”
The 220 largest holders of Trump's memecoin were invited to dinner with him last night at his golf club in the Washington area. The 25 largest investors — who, in some cases, spent tens of millions of dollars to acquire the president's token — would have the opportunity to speak with him at an even more exclusive VIP reception.
The event was closed to the press, and the White House has previously refused to answer questions on the matter, claiming it pertains to Trump's personal life and not his official role as president. Trump and his business partners have also not disclosed any information about who was present at the dinner or what topics were discussed.
One of the confirmed participants was Chinese-born crypto billionaire Justin Sun, who was investigated by the U.S. Department of Justice for suspected financial crimes and was sued by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in 2023 for alleged fraud and market manipulation. In February, the SEC requested a temporary suspension of the proceedings against Sun to seek “a possible resolution” of the case.
“This provides cover for the most corrupt, the most compromised, the worst of the worst, to channel money to Donald Trump to get a private audience with him — to present their cases in search of favorable treatment from the federal government or investment with American taxpayer money,” said Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) about tonight's dinner.
At yesterday's press conference, Democrats called for the president to at least disclose the identities of the people who invested in the memecoin with whom he is dining tonight. A large sign in front of the podium read: “Release the guest list.”
“Let the American people know who bought access to the president,” Murphy stated. “If you think it’s all fine, then what are you hiding?”
