Beware of shitcoins: how not to buy a coin that's impossible to sell 🛑
You open the list of coins on the exchange, sort by daily growth, and see a project with a market cap of a couple million dollars that's shot up by 80%. Your hand automatically reaches for the 'Buy' button. Hold up! A full breakdown of the traps of low-liquidity altcoins.
What is a liquidity trap (Slippage)?
In these coins, there’s very little real money. You might buy a token for $500, the price on the candlestick spikes, but when you hit the 'Sell' button, you find there are no buyers for your amount in the order book. In the end, you'll sell the coin for much less, taking a loss.
What to do?
Before investing in some obscure coin from the third hundred on CoinMarketCap, check its daily trading volume. If it’s under a couple million dollars—steer clear of that asset. Stick to the top 100 coins, where your funds are always safer.
