For the first time, ordinary retail investors in Europe can buy Bitcoin directly through a โspot Bitcoin ETFโ: Switzerlandโs financial regulator, FINMA, has approved the first fund investing exclusively in Bitcoin. It is expected to list on the SIX Swiss Exchange in November under the ticker BBIT.
For everyday investors, the significance is that the โinvestment vehicleโ has changed. Most Bitcoin products previously launched in European markets were ETPsโdebt instruments that give you a claim against the issuer, leaving you exposed if the issuer gets into trouble. This fund, by contrast, is a Swiss collective investment scheme. Its Bitcoin is held by an independent custodian and kept ring-fenced from the fund companyโs own assets, so even if the issuer goes bankrupt, your coins are protected. For now, however, it is offered only to the Swiss public; investors elsewhere cannot yet buy it.
Two details are worth noting. First, FINMA has allowed funds investing in baskets of cryptocurrencies since 2021, but this is the first time it has approved a fund investing only in BTC. The reason given is that Bitcoinโs trading history and volume are sufficient to support it. At the same time, the regulator made clear that approval does not eliminate volatility risk. Second, FINMA said other institutions are also awaiting approval for similar products. If BBIT launches and attracts strong demand, spot ETFs could begin appearing across Europe in greater numbers, directly affecting the existing ETP landscape and the flow of funds.
This comes as investment flows are already picking up: U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs have seen net inflows of more than $1 billion over the past three days. Switzerlandโs move opens another regulated entry point for traditional investment funds.
