US President Donald Trump is preparing to launch a new round of tariffs that could take effect as soon as this week, a move that threatens to escalate global trade tensions, coinciding with the imposition of punitive 50% tariffs on a wide range of Canadian imports, and adjustments to the tariff policy for aluminum imports to encourage manufacturing within the United States.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been paying close attention to the Canadian Dollar (CAD), and one thing has become clear: the currency is facing growing pressure from multiple directions.
The biggest factor behind this weakness is the strength of the US Dollar. Recent economic data from the United States continues to show resilience, especially in employment and inflation. Because of this, many investors now believe that the Federal Reserve may keep interest rates higher for longer than previously expected. Whenever expectations for higher US rates increase, demand for the US Dollar usually rises as well.
At the same time, the Bank of Canada appears to be taking a more cautious approach. While the Fed is still being viewed as relatively hawkish, the BoC has shown signs of patience regarding future rate decisions. This policy gap is creating additional support for USD strength against CAD.
Another important factor is oil.
Canada is one of the world's largest oil exporters, which means crude oil prices often have a direct impact on the Canadian economy and currency. Recently, oil prices have struggled due to concerns about slowing global demand and uncertainty surrounding economic growth. When oil prices decline, the Canadian Dollar often weakens alongside them.
This combination of a stronger US Dollar and weaker oil prices has pushed USD/CAD higher and the Canadian Dollar lower. Traders are now watching key resistance levels on the USD/CAD chart, as further upside could signal additional weakness for the loonie.
For Canadian consumers, a weaker currency can increase the cost of imported goods and add inflationary pressure. However, some export-focused industries may benefit from improved competitiveness in international markets.
