Right now, validators keep Ethereum safe by re-running every transaction to check blocks.

In 2026, Ethereum wants validators to rely more on zero-knowledge proofs (ZK proofs) — basically, cryptographic math that proves a block is valid without re-running everything.

It’s brilliant for scaling.

But it’s also new, complicated, and not yet fully battle-tested at Ethereum’s size.

Instead of re-executing transactions, they’ll verify advanced proofs.

You don’t just have bugs — you risk consensus issues and stalled finality.

Under heavy network load, hacks, or sudden traffic spikes, ZK validation might behave differently than expected.

We simply haven’t seen Ethereum run at scale with this kind of system yet — and that uncertainty is the real danger.

Only a portion of validators are expected to adopt the new model right away.

That creates a weird transition phase where:

some validators operate the “old way”
others work the “new way”

If they disagree about what’s valid, the network can see forks, confusion, or delays.
