$BTC Now Saylor himself stated that the possible BTC sale was to pay dividends and "inoculate the market," meaning demonstrating that BTC could be used as an active treasury asset, not simply held forever.
Why was the sale necessary? Because Strategy has dividend and interest obligations of approximately $1.5 billion per year. In Q1 2026, they recorded a large accounting loss of approximately $12.5 billion due to the decline in BTC prices and fair-value accounting rules.
However, that was mostly an unrealized loss (on paper), not necessarily a cash drain. They still have billions of dollars in cash reserves.
