A Bitcoin wallet inactive for nearly 12 years moved 20.00010537 BTC to a large centralized exchange in March, then recovered nearly the same amount three weeks later before permanently burning the coins in May. According to ChainCatcher, Chainalysis said the wallet is strongly linked to four other addresses under common ownership, with all five receiving initial funds on the same day in April 2014 and most of the coins traceable to the defunct Mt. Gox exchange.

Bitcoin educator Bennet said one of the addresses sent 19.6 BTC to the custodian in 60 transactions between 2022 and 2024, even as Bitcoin’s price more than quadrupled during that period. He noted that 58 of those transfers were close to $10,400 each, suggesting the holder may have used a fixed-dollar liquidation strategy.

Chainalysis said it cannot explain why the holder moved long-dormant assets through a custodian, withdrew nearly the same amount, and then chose to burn them. Because burning Bitcoin is irreversible and requires the same private key, analysts said a routine trading explanation does not fully fit the on-chain evidence. Possible motives include a deliberate signal to reduce Bitcoin’s total supply, privacy concerns, tax considerations, or testing an old wallet arrangement, but none of those theories fully matches all available evidence.
