Tonight was a dark night for Asian markets which recorded heavy losses, with China leading the collapse.

China, the world's second-largest economy, risks a deep economic crisis with global impacts.

Public and private debt has become unsustainable, especially for state-owned enterprises and local governments that have accumulated often unproductive loans, creating a credit bubble ready to burst.

The real estate market has been in crisis since 2020-21: with falling sales and difficulties of large developers such as Evergrande, which declared bankruptcy in 2024 and exited the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2025, the sector is at risk of collapse, dragging down banks and investors.

The “zero Covid” policy has slowed economic recovery, reducing consumption, disrupting supply chains, and hindering technological innovation, exacerbated by government repression in key sectors.

Chinese growth is anemic, estimated below 5%, with high deflationary pressure. The combination of high debt, stagnation in the real estate market, and slowing domestic consumption reduces the confidence of investors and consumers. If the crisis worsens, the entire global financial system will suffer the consequences: China is the world's largest exporter and importer, so its collapse would compromise global demand, stock markets, commodities, and emerging currencies, triggering global inflation and recession.
