STOCKS | Goldman Sachs Warns U.S. Consumer Spending May Cool as Tax Refund Boost Fades $OPG $ACE $PORTAL
Goldman Sachs economists said U.S. consumer spending growth is likely to weaken in the second half of the year. According to Sina Finance, economist Jan Hatzius said the strong spring spending seen in recent data was a temporary result of a surge in tax refunds, and that real consumer spending growth is expected to slow to 1% to 1.5% as household real cash flow stalls. Hatzius said consumer-facing companies posted solid second-quarter sales growth, with the median revenue of S&P 500 discretionary stocks rising 5.9% year on year and the median revenue of consumer staples stocks rising 3.9%, helped by stronger-than-expected tax refund payments. He also said broad-based consumer growth was visible across retailers serving both lower- and higher-income households. The report noted that U.S. retail sales fell in July, partly because Amazon Prime Day was held earlier than usual. It also said U.S. second-quarter GDP grew at an annualized rate of 1.5%, down from 2.1% in the first quarter, while consumer spending growth accelerated to 3.2% from 0.5%.
