Anthropic has just called for a global pause in AI development, warning that AI is approaching the point where it can improve itself without human assistance.
By April 2026, Claude led a comprehensive AI research project entirely on its own. Humans chose the topic. Claude designed all the experiments, conducted all the tests, and delivered the results.
Two human researchers spent an entire week on the same problem and only made 23% progress.
Claude achieved 97%.
Claude Mythos Preview is now 52 times faster than a qualified human at enhancing AI training code. The same task takes a human 4 to 8 hours. Claude does it better.
Claude is already writing 80% of Anthropic's internal code. Their engineers are getting 8 times more work done than in 2024, not because they’re working harder, but because Claude is doing most of it.
By March 2024, Claude could handle a 4-minute task on its own. Today, it manages tasks of 12 hours. This figure doubles every 4 months. Week-long tasks are expected by 2027.
Anthropic warns that once AI can design and improve its own next version without any human help, no one knows how fast things will evolve next, or if humans will still be able to control it.
For the first time in several months, more than $BTC are held at a loss (10.5 million) than at a profit (9.8 million).
