#DeFiGetsGraded: S&P Global's First-Ever DeFi Credit Rating

Big news for decentralized finance: S&P Global has assigned its first-ever credit rating to a DeFi protocol, giving Sky Protocol a B- rating with a stable outlook. This decision marks a historic milestone for both the crypto industry and traditional finance, signaling a new era of institutional engagement with blockchain-based platforms.

Sky Protocol, formerly Maker Protocol, operates the USDS stablecoin, which boasts a $7.1 billion market cap—ranking third behind USDT and USDC. S&P’s move means institutional investors can now assess DeFi projects with familiar tools, facilitating risk assessment and bridging the gap between decentralized and traditional finance.

However, the rating also reflects the unique risks facing DeFi: S&P cited concerns about governance centralization (with founder Rune Christensen owning nearly 9% of governance tokens), high depositor concentration, weak capitalization, and regulatory uncertainty. Sky's risk-adjusted capital ratio stands at just 0.4%, and the USDS stablecoin’s ability to maintain its dollar peg received a “constrained” score.

Despite these challenges, the fact that a leading ratings agency is formally evaluating DeFi protocols underscores the sector’s operational maturity and growing relevance. If adopted widely, such frameworks could help unlock institutional capital, encourage broader adoption, and raise the bar for transparency and risk management in DeFi.
