Right now, when we talk to an AI character on a platform like Holoworld we look at a screen we type text or maybe talk into a microphone we see replies as text or hear a synthesized voice it is amazing but it still feels like we are using a device there is a glass screen between us and the digital world.
But this is all about to change the next big step for AI characters is to break through that screen the goal is to move these digital beings out of our phones and computers and place them directly into the world around us using Virtual Reality (VR) and the Metaverse this fusion could fundamentally change how we connect with technology and with each other.
What is the Metaverse, Really?
You can think of the Metaverse as the next version of the internet instead of looking at websites on a flat screen you would step inside the internet you would put on a VR headset and find yourself in a digital world a world that could look like anything you could be in a realistic city, a fantasy landscape or a classroom on Mars.
In this world, you would not be just a name on a profile you would have a body, an avatar that represents you you could walk around gesture with your hands and make eye contact with other people avatars the Metaverse is about experiencing digital spaces as if you are physically present inside them.

This future is not here yet there are big challenges hardware (VR headsets) needs to become lighter and more comfortable AI needs to become faster to animate characters in real time without delays and we will need to grapple with new ethical questions about how we relate to these incredibly realistic digital beings but the direction is clear yhe flat two dimensional screen is a temporary interface ultimate goal is a digital world that feels as rich social and real as the physical one.
