📅 December 9, 1899 – Commemoration of the Niamey Massacre

On this day, we remember one of the darkest episodes in Niger's history: the Niamey Massacre, which occurred on December 9, 1899, during the Voulet-Chanoine colonial expedition.

Under the command of Paul Voulet and Julien Chanoine, this French mission, which had spiraled out of control, was traversing the region in a climate of extreme violence.

In Niamey, their troops committed a deadly massacre, leaving hundreds of victims among the local population – men, women, and children.

Some historical accounts mention more than 300 deaths, others even more, so great was the atrocity.

This December 9th remains a symbol of:

the brutality of colonial campaigns,

the price paid by the peoples of West Africa,

and the silent resistance of those who suffered and will never be forgotten.

Today, we honor the memory of the victims and remember that history, however painful, must be told so that future generations understand, learn, and stand up for the dignity of all peoples.

🕊️ May their souls rest in peace. Let us remember.
