The EU had earlier aimed to phase out Russian LNG by January 1, 2028, but Trump has persistently pushed the bloc to cut energy ties with Moscow sooner, warning of further steps otherwise.

Fossil fuel revenues power Russia’s war machine. We must shut that down. So we’re banning Russian LNG imports into Europe. It’s time to turn off the tap. We are also going after those who buy oil despite sanctions—refineries, traders, and petrochemical firms in third countries, including China,” said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

This ban requires unanimous approval from all 27 EU member states to take effect.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that any EU plan to end energy imports faster would not hurt Russia or force a policy shift.

Advancing the Russian LNG ban to January 2027 means Europe must now move fast to secure alternatives—with U.S. LNG likely to top the list.
