🇲🇽 FOUR INDIGENOUS WOMEN JAILED IN CHIAPAS FOR REFUSING TO DONATE THEIR LAND
In the community of El Pozo, San Juan Chamula, four Tzotzil women were violently detained by traditional authorities after refusing to cede their properties. Videos released on August 21 show the moment of the arbitrary detention.
💧 The reason for the conflict: on the women's land, there is a SPRING that supplies water to more than 2,500 residents of the community. The authorities demanded the "voluntary donation" of the land to control access to water.
The owners defended their right to keep their land and access their natural resources. In response, the community authorities proceeded to jail them, violating their fundamental human rights.
The videos went viral on social media, generating national outrage. The state authorities of Chiapas opened an investigation against the men involved in the illegal detention of the women.
🏛️ San Juan Chamula is known for its conflicts over water, religious intolerance, and the system of uses and customs that sometimes clashes with human rights. The community has had historical problems with access to potable water.
