WCT's Book Inventory and Return Management at Dangdang Cloud Warehouse
In 2024, Dangdang introduced the WCT inventory system to address issues of 'inventory backlog and difficult return traceability' for the book category. When books are received into the warehouse, on-chain records are generated (including ISBN number, print batch, edition), and inventory is updated in real-time upon dispatch to avoid 'overselling and stockouts'; when consumers return books, the reason for return (such as 'content mismatch', 'condition issues') and the status of the book (such as whether it is unopened, whether there are missing pages) are recorded on-chain to distinguish between 'resalable' and 'scrap' categories, thus preventing return disputes. As of November 2024, this system covers six core cloud warehouses of Dangdang, with inventory count error rate reduced from 2.8% to 0.5%, return processing time shortened from 4 days to 12 hours, and book inventory turnover rate increased by 28%, effectively reducing inventory costs in the book industry.
