A criminal impersonated a senior law enforcement officer in the UK and used social engineering techniques to trick victims into entering their wallet seed phrases on a phishing website, successfully stealing approximately $2.8 million (€2.1 million) in Bitcoin.
According to police reports, the scammer claimed that the mobile phone of an arrested suspect contained the victims' identity documents and urged them to "protect" their assets. The victims then entered their recovery phrases on a carefully designed counterfeit website, resulting in the funds being stolen within minutes.
