At the beginning of the evening this Sunday (17), the Central Bank issued an unprecedented security alert to the associations representing the institutions of the Instant Payments System. The warning was about a possible attempt of cyberattack on the Brazilian financial system related to operations with the stablecoin USDT.
“Unusual movement related to USDT (Tether) operators”
According to the statement, there was an unusual increase in the search for USDT (Tether) operators, especially with unusual or 'front' profiles. This practice, by the way, had already been observed before the attack on C&M Software in July, which resulted in billion-dollar losses.
The Central Bank advised financial institutions to intensify the monitoring of transactions at night, increase authentication, block suspicious operations, and immediately notify the authorities.
Rocelo Lopes, CEO of SmartPay and creator of the Truther app, highlighted Truther's proactive action following the alert. He explained that the company had already reinforced the entire monitoring system to identify operations outside the usual patterns. Among the measures adopted by Truther is, for example, a new method of receiving via PIX, called 'payment link', which creates an extra layer of security:
Increase in operations from BRL to USDT
The increase in operations from the real to USDT — especially during nighttime and with volumes significantly above average — had already been identified during the attack on C&M Software, when Truther blocked suspicious transactions with quick and efficient filters. These signs serve as an early warning for similar attacks, adding value to the security practices adopted by Truther and now reinforced by the Central Bank.
The combination of the preventive alert issued by the Central Bank with Truther's technological and innovative response (SmartPay) highlights a crucial moment in the fight against financial fraud in Brazil, concluded Rocelo.
This scenario points to the strengthening of the instant payment system — and to the importance of recognizing blockchain technology and stablecoins not as villains, but as allies in building a more secure and resilient financial system.
