Base, Coinbase’s Ethereum layer-2 network, experienced a 33-minute block production halt on Aug. 5 due to a backup sequencer not fully prepared to handle transactions.

At 6:07 a.m. UTC, Base’s main sequencer began falling behind on block production, prompting the Conductor system to switch to a backup sequencer. However, the backup was still undergoing setup and failed to process blocks, Base Build explained.
The core team quickly responded, restoring operations by 6:40 a.m. UTC. Additional time was spent confirming no chain reorganization was required.
Centralization Concerns
The event highlighted Base’s reliance on centralized sequencers as a potential single point of failure. Despite running multiple sequencers, the system depends on Conductor’s management to ensure uptime.
Base, which currently holds more than $4.1 billion in total value locked (TVL), said infrastructure updates will ensure all sequencers in the cluster are block-production-ready.
