After the devastating tsunami of 2011, Japan built more than 400 km of seawalls, some up to 14.7 m high, to protect vulnerable areas. Dikes (berms, retaining walls, defense barriers) were also reinforced.

In the last few hours, there was a strong earthquake of magnitude 8.8 in Russia, a tsunami alert was issued for Japan, and waves of up to 1.3 meters high arrived. The walls have helped to stop these waves, giving time for evacuations.
