From the Appeals Chamber of the International Criminal Court (ICC) it was determined this Friday, August 1, that Prosecutor Karim Khan must withdraw from the Venezuela case.

According to the ruling, there are "reasonable grounds to believe" that Khan has incurred a conflict of interest in the investigation of crimes against humanity committed in Venezuela by officials of Nicolás Maduro's government.

It was revealed that the judges of the ICC concluded that Karim Khan must withdraw from the case. Therefore, they gave a deadline of three weeks to present his formal excuse, in accordance with Rule 35 of the Court's Regulations, as reported by Monitoreamos.

The decision comes after the Arcadia Foundation submitted a request for recusal due to the conflict of interest arising from a "familial, professional, and hierarchical relationship" between Prosecutor Khan and his sister-in-law, Venkateswari Alagendra, who has represented Maduro's government.
