In July 2022, Shanteari Young, owner of a daycare in Maryland, was arrested after shooting her husband, James Weems, a former police officer, upon discovering that he was abusing minors at her childcare center. Weems was sentenced to life in prison in 2024.

Young received a four-year sentence, double the recommended amount, which generated outrage among her supporters. During the trial, she testified against Weems and legally changed her last name. Her case became a symbol of the gaps in the judicial system regarding child abuse.

After more than three years in prison, she was released in 2025 and transferred to a reintegration center. Today, she works for the protection of children and seeks to rebuild her life in Maryland.
