FRANCE 🇫🇷 : FRANCE AND TELEGRAM: A WAR FOR FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION?
Pavel Drouv, the founder of Telegram, a very popular social network, accuses France of waging war on freedom of expression. Why? Because French authorities are investigating platforms like Telegram and X (formerly Twitter) for issues of misinformation, algorithm manipulation, and foreign interference. Drouv was even arrested in France in 2024 for these reasons. He believes that France is exaggerating and that these investigations hinder innovation and drive away tech companies.
On one hand, Drouv defends a simple idea: social networks should be free, with minimal rules, so that people can express themselves as they wish. He states that France and Europe are putting too much pressure on platforms, while traditional media (like television or newspapers) have fewer constraints. For him, this is unfair and discourages investors.
But on the other hand, France and Europe respond that they just want to protect citizens. They explain that without rules, networks like Telegram can become havens for false information, hate speech, or even terrorism. They have created laws, like the Digital Services Act (DSA), to require large platforms to better control their content and be more transparent.
The question is: who is right? Should social networks be completely free, even if it allows ill-intentioned people to take advantage? Or should there be strict laws to protect society, even if it slightly limits freedom?
