Suzanne Syz is helping to change the jewelry industry.
This Geneva jeweler is working with the Swiss technology foundation Origyn to create digital certifications for all 1,001 of her pieces, making her one of the first jewelry artists to do so.
Syz is following in the footsteps of major designers like Chopard, Cartier, and Tiffany, who are leveraging this technology to enhance the authenticity and traceability of their luxury goods. While these companies currently only use digital verification for some products, Syz will be among the first jewelry artists to certify their entire collection through blockchain.
This practice is becoming increasingly popular, with watch brands like Vacheron Constantin and Breitling relying on blockchain technology to verify the authenticity of their timepieces since 2019, citing the technology's anti-counterfeit and tamper-proof advantages. Origyn is one of many companies dedicated to digitally verifying the provenance and ownership of high-value real-world assets like artworks, gold, and jewelry.
Syz stated during an interview with Origyn founder Gian Boschler that this technology represents the future of luxury certification.
"This is the solution to the problem we face now," Syz said. "What else can guarantee 100% that what you buy is what you think you're buying?"
Syz's 1,001-piece collection is loved by collectors such as Elizabeth Taylor and Princess Gloria von Thurn und Taxis of Germany, with each piece accompanied by a secure, tamper-proof digital passport to protect its value and trace its heritage - unlike luxury goods, which are typically recorded, appraised, and collected through physical documents.
"Blockchain enables decentralization," Boschler said. "Certification and registration have always been controlled by people; what we need is equality and fairness so that everyone can access this registration information."
Each blockchain-based certificate contains biometric data, ownership history, and rich media content, establishing a connection between physical items and their digital records. This new method of luxury certification is especially useful when items are lost, stolen, or traded. Syz's press release states that adopting blockchain technology is "a natural evolution in her pursuit of originality and excellence."
