Pop Mart has established a film studio to produce an animated series based on its popular blind box toy Labubu.
According to reports from Cover News and Daily Economic News, Beijing Pop Mart Cultural Creative Co., Ltd. has registered the copyright for the first season script of the (Labubu and Friends) animation series this year. The registration date was March 18 of this year, and the completion date of the work was January 15 of this year.
Previously, Pop Mart had registered multiple trademarks related to Labubu, with international classifications covering education and entertainment, lighting and air conditioning, fitness equipment, and more.
Reports indicate that with the explosive popularity of Labubu, Pop Mart is moving along the path of Disney. Since the opening of the Pop Mart theme park in September 2023 to the current preparation of the (Labubu and Friends) animation, Pop Mart seems to be aligning with Disney's development path.
Pop Mart's founder Wang Ning once mentioned, "We want to learn from Disney, an IP company that can become China's Disney. But gradually, we also hope to stop saying we want to become China's Disney; we hope that one day we can become the world's Pop Mart."
Financial reports show that in 2024, Pop Mart achieved revenue of 13.04 billion yuan (RMB, the same below, 2.33 billion SGD), a year-on-year increase of 106.9%. The IP THE MONSTES, where Labubu belongs, achieved revenue of 3.04 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 726.6%, becoming Pop Mart's highest-grossing IP.
However, Pop Mart has created product scarcity through marketing methods such as limited releases and hidden collections, and many consumers have begun to oppose such hunger marketing practices.
