The Ethereum Foundation announced a $500,000 allocation for the legal defense of Roman Storm, co-founder of Tornado Cash, ahead of his trial in the U.S., scheduled for July 14, 2025. Additionally, the foundation promised to match community donations up to $750,000. Storm is accused of money laundering and violating sanctions through the development of the crypto mixer Tornado Cash, which authorities claim was used to launder $1 billion in illegal funds. The foundation emphasized that "privacy is the norm, and writing code is not a crime," supporting the idea of freedom in open-source development.
This move reflects the position of the Ethereum Foundation regarding the protection of privacy and developers' rights in the crypto industry. In January 2025, Paradigm also donated $1.25 million for Storm's defense, and Vitalik Buterin contributed 50 $ETH ($170,000) in support of Storm and another developer, Alexey Pertsev. The Tornado Cash case raises discussions about the boundaries of developers' liability for the use of their code. The foundation's support highlights the importance of decentralized finance (DeFi) and privacy.
