Petro requests Colombia's admission to the Brics bank
The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, requested on Friday (16) the admission of his country to the New Development Bank of Brics during a visit to China. Colombia proposes to invest $512.5 million in the institution.
Although he does not intend to formally join the Brics bloc due to maintaining neutrality in the Ukraine war, Petro seeks participation in the multilateral bank as a way to diversify international relations.
The visit also marked Colombia's adherence to the Belt and Road Initiative, a Chinese project aimed at expanding its global influence, which generated negative reactions from the United States.
As part of his agenda, Petro proposed the creation of a railway link between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans in Colombia as an alternative to the Panama Canal.
Despite American criticisms, the Colombian president stated that he maintains an equitable dialogue with both countries.
